My Obsession With Wisdom

October 08, 2018 by Hiba Samawi

Intelligence alone does not get us where we need to go or even necessarily where we want to go. For that, the human creature must exercise harder-won capacities of wisdom, and wise action. - Krista Tippett

I am obsessed with the notion of wisdom. It feels reassuring to me.

This goes back to when I was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease nine years ago at the age of 29. At the time, I felt my world crumbling. I felt I had a potential ticking time bomb in my body, which doctors told me might or might not lead to kidney failure later in life.

I felt a deep sense of helplessness. A sense that while I could take care of myself and my health as much as possible, stuff can happen that I can't control.

Life reminds us of this in big and small ways, doesn't it?

For me, what feels reassuring is trusting that whatever happens in life, I can always choose to learn and grow from it - to become wiser.

Wisdom is defined as 'knowledge, learning, experience'. It feels deeper than intelligence to me - more of a self-knowledge, a knowing of how to live. It is more of a way of being in the world.

Wisdom feels like a path I can commit to, regardless of the circumstances around me. Regardless of what happens around me.

This is why I chose the name Wiser Humans. It is why I believe so strongly in wisdom, and that we can always cultivate this, that we can learn skills for becoming wiser - and that wisdom can lead to a more meaningful life.

I am excited to share a new series of workshops is designed to help you end the year a little wiser by learning practical skills around:

* October 21: Boundaries + Assertiveness

* November 11: Emotions + Intuition

* December 2: Connection + Trust

Each workshop combines theoretical knowledge from psychology with fun, practical exercises where we also work with a felt sense of what is happening in the body.

This will be a unique mix of wisdom from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) / Sensorimotor Psychotherapy / Brené Brown / Harriet Lerner / Karla McLaren.

You can come to one workshop or all three.

Each workshop lasts 3.5 hours from 13:30 - 17:00 and includes a break + homemade snack.

I really hope to see you there!
